WRFC first team continued their excellent run of form that has seen them string an impressive eight wins in a row together against North Kildare, Longford,  Coolmine,  Tullow,  Mullingar,  Ashbourne,  Clondalkin and now Portlaoise. Wicklow travelled to Togher Park Champions to face a Portlaoise team that were recently crowned division 2A Champions in the Bank of Ireland Provincial Towns Cup quarter final.

The game was played on sunny afternoon on a dry surface, with a light crosswind that blew straight across the pitch. A huge crowd of supporters travelled to Portlaoise to support Wicklow. Wes Wojnars men knew they were in for a  tough attritional game and that is exactly what they got. They started well and had the home side under some pressure right from the off.

Wicklow seconds seal league with another win.

Wednesday, 09 March 2016 10:56

Mullingar 2nd XV  - 7     Wicklow 2nd XV  31

Wicklow seconds completed a memorable day for Wicklow RFC with a 7-31 win over Mullingar to win the Leinster League title. Two tries by Ben Porter, and one apiece from Ally Byrne, Niall Higgins and David Henderson sealed the win. Captain Ally Byrne was presented with the trophy afterwards by the President of the Leinster Branch.

Wicklow had a very  impressive campaign where they racked up ten wins and a draw with only one loss. Add to that three wins in the South East League and the Towns Cup victory over Clondalkin and you have an excellent season so far.  Having wrapped up the league the seconds will now concentrate on trying to win the two remaining trophies available to them. Namely the Seconds Cup which has never been won by the club and the South East League.

Huge credit is due to coach Andrew Flood and all the players in the squad, for their efforts to date. The club is very proud of them.

The club  have a crucial month ahead with big games in the cups, playoffs and south east finals.  We are asking all of our supporters to get  behind both teams and give them every support.

Josh Van Der Flier

Friday, 26 February 2016 11:30

Congratulations to Josh Van Der Flier @joshvdf on his selection in theIrishRugby team for the Six Nations Championship game against England Rugby in Twickenham on Saturday evening. 21 year old Josh from Wicklow Town, is the first former Wicklow RFC player to be capped for Ireland.

Joshs dad Dirk played for Wicklow in the 80s and 90s and was known as one of the hardest tacklers the club has ever seen. Josh and his brother Johan played mini rugby in Wicklow before going on to secondary school in Wesley College. Josh played with the likes of Mark Higgins and Jason Byrne who are currently starring on the senior team in Wicklow. They were coached by Joshs father Dirk.

The Leinster Rugby star was a guest at the WRFC Summer camp in August 2015 and was a huge hit with the kids. He spent three hours signing autographs and posing for photographs. The kids were enthralled with him as he regaled them with tales of when he took part in the same summer camp 15 years before. He took on the entire kinder section (Under 5s) in a tug of war but was unable to match their power on the day. Sales of red scrum caps have since gone through roof in the club shop.

From everyone in Wicklow RFC Josh congratulations and the very best of luck. We cant claim to have made you the player you are today but hopefully we lit a fire inside you that helped to set you on the path that led to todays announcement. For that we are very very proud. We hope that yours will be the first of many more caps to come from Wicklow RFC over the years.
