Firsts into Provincial Towns Cup Final

Friday, 08 April 2016 13:38

Wicklow 1st XV 16     Clondalkin 1st XV 13

WRFC first team created their own piece of history on Sunday when a dramatic last minute try gave them an incredible win over a gallant Clondalkin side in Co Carlow RFC to secure a place in the Provincial Towns Cup final for only the second time in the clubs history. Wicklow had beaten Longford, Ashbourne and Roscrea to get to the semi finals. They had also beaten Clondalkin in the recent play off for promotion/relegation. In some ways that victory probably made Captain Wes Wojnars men slight favourites on paper going in to this crucial game. This was always going to be different.

The game was played on wet afternoon on a pitch that was barely playable. There was water lying on the pitch in some sections and as the game wore on the surface turned into a mud bath. The conditions suited Clondalkins bigger and more powerful pack while the lighter and more mobile Wicklow unit would have preferred a dry day.

Despite the conditions both sides served up a memorable game that was full of bravery, determination, skill and even a dramatic finish.

U16 Leinster Premier Final

Friday, 08 April 2016 08:59

This is a big weekend for our Under 16’s who are playing in the Final of the Leinster Premier League. This is a great achievement for this squad, who are looking to secure their first Leinster League title. They come up against a strong Naas team, with whom they have already had some fantastic battles with this season.

The Final is being played in Cill Dara RFC on Saturday (9-Apr), with kick off scheduled for 1.30pm. It’s 10 years since Wicklow last won a Leinster Premier League youth title, so we would encourage as many people as possible to travel to Cill Dara RFC on Saturday and cheer for the lads on their big day. The team have remained unbeaten in the League this season, toping their group in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the competition. 2 weeks ago they overcame North Kildare 17 – 7 in the semi-final to earn themselves a shot at the title.

We wish the Under 16’s all the very best for Saturday.

Towns Cup QF win

Monday, 21 March 2016 15:24

Wicklow 1st XV are into the Provincial Towns Cup semi final for only the fourth time in the clubs history.

Portlaoise  1st XV 8 Wicklow 1st XV 35

WRFC first team continued their excellent run of form that has seen them string an impressive eight wins in a row together against North Kildare, Longford,  Coolmine,  Tullow,  Mullingar,  Ashbourne,  Clondalkin and now Portlaoise. Wicklow travelled to Togher Park Champions to face a Portlaoise team that were recently crowned division 2A Champions in the Bank of Ireland Provincial Towns Cup quarter final.

The game was played on sunny afternoon on a dry surface, with a light crosswind that blew straight across the pitch. A huge crowd of supporters travelled to Portlaoise to support Wicklow. Wes Wojnars men knew they were in for a  tough attritional game and that is exactly what they got. They started well and had the home side under some pressure right from the off.

Promotion Play Off

Wicklow firsts win the promotion play off v Clondalkin but now face an agonising wait.

Clondalkin 1st XV 16 Wicklow 1st XV 21
WRFC first team won the promotion relegation battle with Clondalkin RFC at Monkstown FC on Sunday but now face an agonising wait on other results to see if their spot in Leinster Junior rugbys premier division is confirmed.
The game was played on a beautiful spring day with a light breeze that favoured Clondalkin in the first half. Clondalkin started well and had Wicxklow under some pressure in the early stages. Two early penalties from their outhalf Chris Jebb gave the Dubliners a 6 – 0 lead.
