Weekend Update

Wicklow 1st XV 29  Portarlington RFC 11

Wicklow 1st XV ended their poor run of form with an outstanding performance to beat a big Portarlington side at Ashtown lane on Sunday afternoon. A difficult series of games where Wicklow struggled to close out games having got themselves into winning positions has been brought to an end.

Portarlington came to Wicklow having hammered Garda last week to move ahead of Wicklow in the league table. Consequently this was an absolute must win game for both clubs. The match was played on a dry cool day with a breeze that favoured the midlanders in the first half.

Wicklow started in determined fashion and were soon awarded with a long range penalty. Mark Donohoe stepped up and drove the ball over the bar from 45 metres in front of the posts to give Wicklow the lead 3 – 0 after five minutes. Donohoe added two more good penalties to stretch Wicklow lead to 9 – 0 after quarter of an hour.
