Wicklow Women v DCU

Wicklow Women 29 DCU 15

The wicklow womens team had their 1st game since winning the Metro Cup, hosting DCU in the Leinster League. The rain had stopped but the wind was still blowing across the field for the entire game.

DCU started the strongest and moved the ball well through their dangerous backline. Wicklow held firm on defence, showing good line speed but DCU finally found space out wide to free up their wing for the 1st try of the game.

Wicklow bounced back straight away and scored a rehearsed set piece move, putting flying fullback Ella Roberts into space to score near the posts. This kickstarted Wicklow who dominated the next 15 mins of play and deserved their 2nd try out wide to wing Kayleigh Sullivan. Wicklow were growing with confidence, but an injury to Meagan Parkinson meant backline reshuffle and maybe over confident as they tried to attack from in their own 22. A mistake was made which gave DCU the opportunity to bounce just before half time. 10 all half time score.
Wicklow started strongly in 2nd half and played smart rugby using the wind and giving out half Sarah Gleeson ball to kick DCU back into their own half. Upfront Wicklow were dominant with strong carrys from Caitlin Griffey, Jess Schmidt and Amy ONeill getting Wicklow close to line with Niamh O'Leary finishing off a great pack try. DCU indiscipline found them down to 14 players and Wicklow quickly punished DCU with a lovely back move to put Erin McConnell in space to score under the posts. Wicklow should have picked up another straight away but missed the opportunity with an overlap went begging, before Amy O'Neill secured the victory with another well worked team try.  DCU managed to score a late try but it was all Wicklow with a final score 29 to 15. This was another great squad effort with all 22 players getting game time. Next league game at home on 1st March hosting Old Belvo.
