u13s top the league

Wicklows U13s Saturday team made the trip to Wexford knowing that a win would secure them top spot in the Leinster Premier league. Equally Wexford were looking for a spot in the play offs and were keen to ensure they progressed in the final stages of the league.

Playing into a stiff wind on a bright mild day, Wicklow were under pressure from the Wexford boys for long periods of time and found it difficult to break into the game. They repelled wave upon wave of attack until half way through the first half when they ran out of defenders and Wexford squeezed in for a try on the right flank. The Wicklow boys were undaunted by this minor setback and set about establishing a foot hold in the game. Great interplay by backs and forwards with drive upon drive brought them close to the Wexford line with Jake Mitchell finishing off a great team effort to barge over under the posts. James Curry converted to leave the score at 5 -7 coming into half time.
The two teams battled it out in the second half, both keen to start moving the ball into the wider channels. Excellent use of the boot by James Curry ensured Wicklow stayed on the front foot for much of this half coupled with a resilient defence ensuring Wexford would not breach the Wicklow line again. The final try came about after Wicklow earned a penalty in their own half and moved the ball again with excellent work from the forwards and backs with Olan Donohoe crossing the line with conversion from James Curry. 10 minutes remained with some nervous moments for the spectators but the boys fitness ensured they dealt with all challenges right through to the end. Well done to the whole squad on an exciting campaign to date. They progress now to the league playoffs where they should hopefully have a home quarter final.

Final score Wexford 5 , Wicklow 14
