Senior women beat Arklow for the first time ever

Wicklow senior ladies team continued on their pre-season preparation on a sunny Sunday morning in Ashtown Lane against fellow Leinster League division 3 side Arklow. The Wicklow team was made up of a number of last years u18 girls, some past players returning to the game and returning from other clubs and some girls who have just recently taken up rugby.

The Wicklow Ladies withstood a sustained period of Arklow pressure at the start of the game and staunch defence prevented the Arklow girls from crossing the line. As the game progressed and the Wicklow confidence grew they started to grow into the match. They moved the ball around with skill and certainly played the match with a smile on their faces. They scored a number of flowing tries and were in full control of the game.

Everyone on the team played well, with newcomer Katie Power probably scoring the pick of the tries as the Wicklow team got their season off to a winning start. The game finished with convincing win for Wicklow over the more established and experienced Arklow girls who were fielding quite a few newcomers themselves.  This was the first time Wicklow have beaten Arklow at senior level. The teams will get a chance to become reacquainted when they meet in the league over the course of the season and a much closer contest is very likely.

Wicklow RFC senior ladies are currently training on a Friday night and are playing in Division 3 of the Leinster league. They are looking for new players to join the squad.  If you are interested in trying something new, coming back to rugby, getting fit, making friends, curious and up for a bit of craic we want to hear from you. Womens Rugby is the biggest growth sport in the country and anyone interested in being a part of this can come along at 7pm any Friday and give it a try.

Wicklow have been pioneers in the development of girls rugby in Leinster and are one of the very few clubs to field teams at minis, u12s, u15s and u18s. The fielding of a senior womens side has proven difficult in recent years but is one of the key goals of the club for the coming season. Fielding a senior womens team is seen as one of the final but most crucial pieces of the jigsaw in providing a pathway for girls all the way from “kinder” rugby (under 6s) all the way to adult rugby.

If you are interested in joining or if you  have any questions please contact Women's Coordinator Ronan Griffey 086-8357475  Manager Iain Fisher 086-8057242 and Coaches Colin Younger 087-9068927 and Paul McDevitt 086-2559258
